Joe Simpson: ‘Ashlee’s Melrose axe was no loss’
The singer/actress landed a role in the revamped version of the 1990s soap opera earlier this year (09), but it was announced in October (09) that her character Violet Foster would be written out of the series.
The tabloid press pounced on the news, portraying Simpson-Wentz’s axe as a career failure – but her dad Joe Simpson has come to the defence of the 25 year old, claiming the media will attack his showbiz family whatever they do.
He tells Usmagazine.com, “We as a family are under a lot of pressure. (People want) to make us look bad and want us to fail.
“(The Melrose Place axe) was never a loss. The world says whatever it says. (The world), again, always want to make it look like we’re failures but we’re really just a family that works hard.”
And the family patriarch is proud of the way Ashlee and her older sister Jessica Simpson deal with the harsh criticism: “My children look at ups and downs and rise up above it all and remain strong…We’re just normal people, and we always try to be who we say we are.”
Simpson-Wentz has since bounced back from the acting disappointment by making her Broadway debut in Chicago as Roxie Hart, reprising the role she first played on London’s West End in 2006.

Ashlee Simpson-Wentz has revealed that her husband Pete Wentz had to really up his game to get her to go out with him.
The 25-year-old mum-of-one said: “He worked hard to get me, let me tell you. But I’m glad he did… He’s my best friend in the world and he’s an amazing dad.”
The actress – who is to be written out of Melrose Place – also spoke about getting back into shape after giving birth to their son Bronx in November 2008, adding that she didn’t follow the Hollywood trend by rushing to lose the baby weight.
She said: “I wasn’t in a rush to get back to this body for anyone else. It was more like: ‘I wanna look good [for me]. I wanna feel good’.”
When it came to losing the weight, the actress tried a home-delivery meal plan, but soon fell off the wagon.
“It was hard,” she said, “because I’m an eater. If I want a grilled cheese sandwich, I’ll eat a grilled cheese sandwich.”
She also insisted that, despite her slim frame, she loves curves and fiercely supports her sister Jessica, who has been criticised for her voluptuous figure.
“It’s disgusting that people would say those things. My sister has an incredible body,” she said.
“What defines sexy is not someone’s weight.”

Is Broadway Ashlee’s secret big project?
After a successful run as Roxie Hart on the London stage, Ashlee Simpson may be returning to NYC to star in the Broadway musical Chicago. Broadway spokesperson Jeremy Shaffer said he could not confirm Ash’s return to the stage, but did confirm that Dancing With the Stars’ celeb Cheryl Burke will not be starring as Roxie. This is a role near-and-dear to Ashlee, who surprised many London theatergoers when she took over the role of Roxie for a five-week run in the fall of 2006.
As for whether or not she’d be willing to revisit the part of Roxie, Ashlee told OK! last year, “It’s a lot of hard work and it’s a great, fantastic show and I would love to do it again.”

Jessica Simpson Talks Ashlee’s Melrose Departure
Showing the strength of their family bond, Jessica Simpson slammed “Melrose Place” for dumping her sister Ashlee from the show.
The “Come on Over” songstress expressed her dislike of the CW soap in a recent rant on her Twitter page, the same place she used to promote the show.
She tweeted, “CW catching up on MP.who writes this crap?i have had bad scripts to work with, but this?thank God my sister is amazing and got you some press.”
However, a CW insider revealed that Ashlee was canned because she couldn’t act. “They hired her because they needed a good name to help create buzz. But she was embarrassingly bad. Producers cut her down as much as possible.”

[Ashlee Simpson] surprised pool partiers after posing alongside her sister, then retreating out of sight, only to return seconds later with husband Pete Wentz. Instead of having a girls’ weekend in Las Vegas, the Fall Out Boy rocker took a break from his tour to be with his wife on her birthday.
So much for the couple wanting to take some time off.
Yet Star Magazine suggested on Friday that the couple was definitely on the outs and hinted at a possible off-camera affair on the set of Simpson Wentz’s show.
“Ashlee is giddy over Colin (Egglesfield),” Star said, and “her husband is jealous.” “The two have been fighting worse than ever,” the story claimed.
The story cited a so-called “’Melrose’ set source” as saying, “On a few occasions, she broke down in sobs after angry phone calls.”
Yet Egglesfield seemed to be the furthest thing from Simpson-Wentz’ mind yesterday; her real-life hubby was the only one she was being “overly flirty” with at MGM Grand.
“I’m very happy in the moment I’m in,” she told the Sun. “My whole family’s here … the whole nine yards. It’s good to celebrate this with everyone.”
In addition to her husband and big sister, her 10-month-old son, Bronx Mowgli; mother, Tina Simpson; and notorious father/manager, Joe Simpson, came to Las Vegas yesterday to mark her birthday.
After what proved to be a whirlwind year, the petite brunette said she had a lot to celebrate.
“I had such a great year … it was definitely the best year of my life, “ she said. “I had, you know, a child and got married.”

“I came in today from tour, I’ve been on the road with my husband,” Simpson-Wentz said.
The 25-year-old was only here for the day, but did her best “to relax and enjoy (her) friends and family” during the brief trip.
Unlike many of the celebrities who are in town this weekend, the singer-turned-actress said a trip to the “Biggest Tattoo Show on Earth” at Mandalay Bay was not part of her itinerary.
“I didn’t even know there was a tattoo show … but I think I’m good on tattoos for now,” the already-inked starlet said.
“I’m (just) here for the day,” she noted, explaining, “We’re going to go home tonight so Bronx can be in bed.”
Though she insisted she didn’t want any birthday gifts, she didn’t wait to return home before opening her presents.
“My friends are so thoughtful with their gifts,” she said. “I didn’t ask for anything but my husband, on the first day of this week, I came to meet him on tour and he got me these amazing Channel shoes with pearls on them.”
“They’re amazing and really hard to find and beautiful,” she gushed. “(But) I don’t need a gift, I’m happy.”
“He gave me some other gifts that were between us,” she smiled.
While the birthday girl enjoyed the brief break in Las Vegas, Simpson-Wentz said her family and career have been keeping her pleasantly busy.
“Right now I’m focused on the show and on Bronx, my son, and my husband and my life,” she said. “It’s so exciting and it’s so lovely.”

Ashlee Simpson-Wentz: ‘Heather Locklear is Incredible’
Ashlee Simpson-Wentz says she can’t wait for Heather Locklear to join the cast of Melrose Place.
The 47-year-old actress will reprise her role as Amanda Woodward on the new CW version of the show, it was announced Tuesday.
Locklear will make her debut appearance Nov. 17.
“We’re all really thrilled that Heather is coming back!” Ashlee told People magazine.
“Of course we are — she was kind of the heart of the show. It’s been great to have a lot of the original cast, and to have Heather join is really incredible. I’m excited!”
“We do a table read on Thursday so I’ll meet her tomorrow,” Simpson added. “I’m really looking forward to it.”
Ashlee and Pete: Fashion’s Night Out
For Fashion’s Night Out, New York City had Victoria Beckham, Charlize Theron and Justin Timberlake, while Hollywood got Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz.
Ash and Pete left baby Bronx home for the night when they hit Ron Herman at Fred Segal to hang with fans and score some J Brand jeans.
“They were so cute together and looked really happy,” says an eyewitness.
Despite the crowd and cameras, the couple even engaged in some PDA…
The two were seen stealing kisses in between photo ops with fans.
Pete even played the board game Guess Who with some partygoers.
As for what Ash looks for in a pair of jeans, the new mom said “comfort and style” are key. But no doubt she’ll spend some time suffering for fashion now that her new Melrose Place gig is underway.
Ashlee Simpson’s Motherhood Maturation
Currently doing her best to juggle a small-screen career and her motherly duties, Ashlee Simpson recently revealed that she feels more mature as a result of her efforts.
The “Melrose Place” cutie chatted with Redbook for their October 2009 issue, telling, “I’ve grown up so much. The great thing about being pregnant is that you have nine months and it really does prepare you.”
Miss Simpson adds, “Your body is changing, and it’s such an amazing time to feel that connection. I did prenatal yoga, which was a nice way to mellow down and focus on me and Bronx. Being pregnant was the healthiest I’ve ever been in my life. Except for the cupcakes.”
And while Ashlee’s always occupied, she says that her much-freer older sister, Jessica, is the envious one. “She’s always saying, ‘Oh, I want a baby!’ Being a mom’s so empowering and incredible. I’m one of those people who believes that life brings things to you at a certain time for a certain reason, and if you just go with it, that’s where the best moments come from.”

Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson-Wentz have vowed to move away from the bright lights of Hollywood in a bid to protect their baby son Bronx from the paparazzi.
The couple is notoriously private about their family life and refused to sell pictures of little Bronx Mowgli to any magazines after he was born in November, eventually showing fans the tot in a snap on the Fall Out Boy star’s website.
But Wentz is determined the 10 month old won’t grow up affected by his parents’ fame, and is planning to move his young family away from Los Angeles.
He says, “Once you have a kid it’s a little bit different. You’re more protective. You want them to have a normal life, or as normal as possible.
“We’re going to figure out moving somewhere that’s a little less (public). But we still got to be close enough where we can work.”
And the 30 year old is hoping the move will thwart the snappers who currently follow his every move: “There’ll be too many of them and you’ll get mobbed. You’re just trying to protect your wife or your kid. It’s just frustrating.”
